Truck sales make rebound with lower gas prices

From CNN Money:

Trucks and SUVs will outsell cars in December, according to researchers at the automotive Website Edmunds.com, something that hasn't happened since February. "Despite all the public discussion of fuel efficiency, SUVs and trucks are the industry's biggest sellers right now as a remarkable number of buyers seem to be compelled by three factors: great deals, low gas prices and winter weather," commented Michelle Krebs, Senior Editor of Edmunds' AutoObserver.com.

While I feel a bit better for the car makers because of the profit margin they make on trucks and SUVs versus lighter cars in this dire time of need, I also ask the question "Did we not learn anything from last summer?" I mean, I understand that the sales of trucks and bigger vehicles is higher during the winter due to the need they serve with the poor weather--and this winter has been exceptionally bad thus far--but with gas prices hovering around 1.70 after being at 4.00 a gallon this summer, I have to wonder if we are once again blinded by smoke and mirrors.

Experts have stated all along that the demand for oil and gas would go down this fall and winter, would hold for a bit, but within a year or so that the demand would go way up and oil prices would be sky high yet again--so, are we yet again creating a monster by just seeing what is in front of our face?
