Virtual Dead Heat in World Auto Sales

I reported a while ago that GM would more than likely be giving up its title as world auto sales leader--a title it has held for 76 straight years. And when GM released its numbers after Toyota posted an amazing 9.37 million cars, many thought it was going to be a wide gap.

It wasnt. In fact, it's a virtual dead heat. The final number reported by General Motors was 9,369,524, and Toyota has already said that its going to restate its numbers, which could mean that they pull farther ahead or maybe it was too high. Either way, it is very apparent that their may be a huge changing of the guard, especially considering that of those 9.36 million cars, only a little over 3.7 million cars were sold in the US, which has normally been the rock that GM has relied upon.

What will happen in the future? Toyota's share of the U.S. market has more than doubled since 1990, when it sold about 1 million vehicles for a 7.5 percent share of the domestic market, according to Ward's AutoInfoBank. While GM has retooled its business, it had better get on the ball--NOW.
