Volvo cutting 2K jobs

volvo-xc60-ri.jpg

In a move that has been anticipated since May, Volvo announced that due to lagging sales, 2000 jobs would be cut, mostly from their headquarters in Sweden, although the exact number has yet to be determined as to when and where it will happen. 1400 of these positions will be operations type jobs within their corporate structure, and 600 jobs will be blue-collar jobs.

Ford has been hinting at buying the Volvo brand for a while now, and this could be ripe for the picking. Volvo lost 151 million in the first quarter and is in a prime position for a takeover and cash infusion. However, Volvo aficionados have cried foul by this proposed move, afraid that with the style that Ford has versus the style that Volvo has accomplished over several years clashes, and the quality and luxury that Volvo brings to owners may be discarded in favor of cheaper and more affordable cars with the Volvo stamp on it.

The ownership carousel is probably going to keep spinning for a while as smaller companies will become engulfed by the big guns trying to position themselves for a future profit, but it remains to be seen how it will play out. Stay tuned.
