Will Lamborghini change to reduce CO2 emissions?

Motor Authority discussed the issue of the EU's goal of carbon dioxide emissions and how this would affect different cars. It discussed the Lamborghini and the fact that the way the car is made that it would have to make significant changes to reach the EU's goals.

Ferrari has already gone on record that it will change to as low as 280 g/km by 2012 (EU's proposed goal is 120 g/km and both the Ferrari and the Lamborghini's average well over 400 g/km currently). However, Lamborghini has not made any types of plans--in fact, the CEO of the company has said that by changing this and altering the car for the goals and otherwise, that they will in fact be basically taking the "bite" out of why Lamborghinis even are around in the first place.

To offset these "drawing a line in the sand" commentary, he also went on to say that because of the luxurious nature of the car, it was not as if the use of the vehicle was like any other, and that the cars are used on a very small scale, basically being "weekend cars", so in fact, the impact that they have, currently, does not even really impact the CO2 issue.

I would tend to agree that by changing the speed/size/engine sound in order to allow for better CO2 emissions, that essentially it would be making a brand new car, which may be his way of thumbing his nose at Ferrari as well, but it remains to be seen how long this type of attitude will be allowed on a global scale. If it is enforced wholeheartedly down the line, prepare to see the speed cars go the way of the dinosaur.
