A recent article on Forbes discussed not the question that I am asking in this post, but when and who it will actually be. It's the same pink elephant that has followed around car enthusiasts for some time: are we encountering an era of the unthinkable? Will one of the Big Three in Detroit go down, or as what others are assuming, a merger occurring between one or maybe even all?
I think that the article does, in fact, give merit to this thinking of the when and how--because when numbers are spun the way they are, it certainly does spell gloom and doom. However, the mentality that exists doesn't take into consideration a certain "X" factor, and that of the US Government. Now, I am like most anyone else in that I don't like to rely on someone bailing me out, especially when I make stupid mistakes, but let's face it--this economy is getting to be as bad as it can be, and now with the factoring in of hurricanes and an election that could take the country in a radical direction, the fact that the Big Three are asking for governmental help in the forms of interest free loans is not surprising, and may just be what they need to try and get themselves up, learn from their mistakes, and move on towards the way that they have been ignoring--the foreign way of making cars in a quality, more economical sense.
However, I can understand that the key phrase there is "learn from their mistakes", because, as we all know, this could have been avoided, but we as American consumers supported this ideology as well--we fell victim to the lure of the big gas-guzzling status symbols, and now we're all looking through the egg on our face at the gas pump as it reaches record numbers and may not be done! (Especially considering the tumultuous hurricane season that seems to be upon us).
But--remember things like the depression and the way that the country has worked over decades. When there seems to be something that is crucial to the way of life and something that will be needed to keep this country going, good things happen. Again, I know I am opening myself up to a lot of criticism here because even the way the government gets their money is through me and through other avenues, some known, some unknown. Still, out of sight--out of mind--if that is what it takes, and believe me, I am really beginning to think that this is going to be the only way that the Big Three survive.
